Job Description

Title:  School Counselor
Reports to:  Director of Clinical Services or Counseling Supervisor
Department:  School Counseling
Location:  KES/5350 Machado Road
FLSA Status:  Exempt/B
Compensation : Biweekly, based on weeks worked ** Program Hours:   Monday – Friday, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm
Supervisory Responsibility of staff:  NONE

Position Summary

The School Counselor will conduct individual, classroom-based group therapy and therapeutic interventions   based on the students’ individual IEP goals. Assess crisis situations and support the classroom and behavioral staff as appropriate. 

** Timecards must be submitted for the time worked and verified by the Supervisor no later than the deadline of each pay period.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide individual and group psychotherapy as required by the IEP or the school program, using cognitive

behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy as a foundation.

Attend all-school staff meetings, weekly clinical team meetings, individual and group session meetings, intern

training meetings, and other school staff meetings and trainings as directed, participate in school committees,

programs, and activities, including fall and spring parent nights, as requested.

Provide crisis intervention and consultation (i.e. risk assessment for abuse or danger to self/others). Consult with

clinical supervisor immediately regarding all crises and risk management situations and communicate as instructed

with other members of school staff .

Provide case management, especially as it applies to IEP meetings, parent conferences, and parent education, and

coordinate with MHS or other service providers.  Coordinate requests for assessment and reports.   Keep other

members of the team, including the School Director, informed of all information (within the limits of

confidentiality) concerning students, and be available to receive information from other members of the team. 

Prepare for and attend IEP meetings for assigned students, using Welligent, SEIS, or other district on-line

programs. 

Conduct initial assessment based on IEP, contact with teacher and parent, and student session.  Assess

student/client needs and progress at least quarterly.  Complete required Quarterly Progress Reports.

Complete LAUSD Welligent service tracking system daily for billing purposes and complete clinical session notes for

LAUSD students.

Maintain a billing binder that includes the Register of Daily Attendance for all districts, LAUSD and other district’s

daily case notes, the monthly Welligent report and the Daily Service Log ensuring all information is reconciled and

give the completed and reconciled Clinical Binders to the Supervisor weekly for billing purposes.

Record all collateral contacts (i.e. social workers, behaviorists, doctors, other DMH/mental health therapists, etc.),

including at least monthly contact with parents using the Collateral Contact Log recording time, date, and type of

contact.  Keep in binder for supervision or file in the student’s clinical file.

Other Duties

·         Comply with ECF’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program.  Ensure safe use and operation of tools and/or equipment.

·         Comply with ECF policies and procedures, including mandated reporting requirements.

·         Observe regular, on-site work hours.

·         Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Licenses/Certifications:  Master’s degree in psychology, social work, or marriage and family therapy.   Be  r egistered in California with the Board of Behavioral Sciences.  A BBS Registered intern credential number is required by school districts to work in an NPS as a school counselor.

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience is preferred.

Knowledge/Abilities/Skills:

  • Ability to perform assessments and develop a treatment plan accordingly.
  • Ability to provide counseling and/or psychotherapy services.
  • Ability to manage time and work effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to deal appropriately with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in software applications including Word and Outlook.

Requirements

  • Provide evidence of a negative TB test initially and every three years thereafter.
  • Obtain and maintain NCI, First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Maintain current licensure or registration as an intern.

Work Environment

This is a school environment for students (K–12 th grade) who have varying degrees of learning, behavioral, emotional, and developmental disabilities.  Work will be performed primarily in a private office. Environment may include frequent interruptions, loud noise, odors, varying indoor temperature, and drafts. Outdoor temperature and weather will vary. The Employee may encounter students who are in crisis, exhibiting emotional/psychological distress or behaving in an aggressive manner.   The   Employee may not leave a student unattended in an office.

  • Ability to communicate in person and over the telephone.
  • Ability to implement NCI, First Aid, and CPR.
